About Rumana Monzur:
On June 5th, Ms. Monzur was severely beaten in an attack by her husband in her home city of Dhaka, Bangladesh while on a break from her Masters studies in Political Science at UBC. Her injuries have left her without sight. When it became evident that Ms. Monzur might benefit from further medical care in Canada, UBC actively supported efforts to bring her to Vancouver. Ms. Monzur arrived in Canada on July 5, and began medical treatment immediately. Four surgeries were performed in an attempt to establish some vision, but the severity of Ms. Monzur’s injuries were found to be beyond repair. Ms. Monzur is currently on medical leave from her graduate studies at UBC but intends on completing her thesis. The most recent information about Ms. Monzur can be found at: http://www.publicaffairs.ubc.ca/2011/07/18/rumana-monzur-completes-initial-medical-care/

I am a graduate student of Journalism at UBC and I am currently working as an intern at CTV News. I broke this news last week and i am attaching my follow up to the original story. I will be covering the rally on Sunday as well.
Dana Malaguti
Thanks very much Dana. Looking forward to your coverage of the rally!
Given the mail strike, is there another way I can make a donation from Toronto? I will gladly phone with my credit card number, if that would help. Or go to a bank if there is a trust fund.
Janne Burton (retired family law lawyer who has seen too many similar cases)
Thanks for your question Janne. There will be an online portal expected to be available by the end of today. I will update this site as soon as the portal is available.
Janne,
You can donate online at https://rumana.givecentre.com/donate/11

Is it possible to make a donation by phone, using a credit card, during the postal lockout? Or to a trust fund in a bank?

Hi Janne,
If you’re unable to donate online, call 6048223644 to donate over the phone.
Best,

This petition is aimed at maintaining public pressure in support for Rumana’s rights to justice, education and to live with freedom from violence. As Canadian citizens, a key source of leverage in achieving this aim is the Bangladeshi High Commission in Ottawa. The Commission’s media statement called for \exemplary punishment\ for the perpetrator of the violence against Rumana. We must know hold them to account for following through to ensure justice is served in this case.
[...] Overwhelming support for Rumana’s family have been flowing in from all directions. The Bangladesh Chronicle would like to thank its readers for pledges of donations. We urge that they be directed via check to the UBC fund at this link. [...]
Hi, I would like to know if the fundraising site is still going on for Rumana? It says that the online site is up until Nov.20/11. Or can i send a cheque and where?
Thanks, Joann
Hi Joann,
You can call the number Katie listed above (604-822-3644) to support Rumana. Though the web site is now down, the office continues to pass along all donations.
Best,
Nick Lewis
