After months of construction, the East and West Buchanan courtyards were unveiled on May 28th
In this video, students, staff and faculty share their impressions and favourite features of the new courtyards in the Buchanan complex.
Some highlights include the rotatable purple sculptural seating and the reflecting pool in the West courtyard, the rain garden and grassy knoll in the East courtyard and the Stir It Up Café in BUCH A, which opens onto the West courtyard.

It’s super cool. Overall I’m very impressed by the whole renovation of the complex.
I just don’t understand why landscape designers never put tables in outdoor public spaces at universities. There are essentially none on the whole campus. One can’t write or use a laptop easily sitting at a bench, even if they rotate. It’s tough to take notes in a small group meeting without a table. Eating lunch is also trickier.
The picnic tables in the courtyard at UBCO are used all the time.
Next step: purple rotating picnic tables
Step after: a gazebo so that students can enjoy it in the rain
Thanks for your comment Stephen! There a few updates being made to the courtyards over the next month, and one of them in installing tables in front of some benches.
Very nice designs.
Just out of curiosity: What’s stored in the benches under the pavilion?
