Author Benjamin Wood writes about his experience leaving Vancouver after completing his graduate studies at UBC and moving back to England in 2006. In March, he returned to the city for the first time in six year as part of a promotional tour for his new novel.
“The connection I had felt with Vancouver was so strong that I had come to view my homeland through a dim and murky lens. During this time, I attempted to explain my bitter sense of displacement in a personal essay,” writes Wood. “I titled the piece ‘A Place I Used to Be.’”
“It is both a cruelty and a mercy of the way time passes that it leaves nothing unaffected,” he writes. “The city was moving ahead without me, as I had progressed without it.”
